This month we talk to Claire Garner Interiors, the talented designers, who worked alongside Westbury, to deliver a complete transformation of this beautiful family home in Harpenden. Thanks to the owner’s vision and the combined team’s expertise, this beautiful house successfully combines modern family living with a calming interior…

The Project

Westbury were approached to work on this project by Mint Architecture Architect | Mint Architecture | United Kingdom | Harpenden, a RIBA Chartered Architectural Practice in Hertfordshire.

They in turn had been approached by the property owners to assist with the full house renovation of this large Victorian family home.

Westbury were asked to design and deliver a 30sqm orangery and loggia, to the rear of the property, timber casement windows throughout, garage doors, a new entrance door, principle interior doors and pocket doors to the ground floor.

Claire Garner Interiors were originally approached by the owners for colour advice and window treatments, however this went on to became a whole house interior design project.

The clients brief was to create a calming space, which was efficient and functional for the whole family.

The Solution

Claire Garner Interiors said “We began the project with a virtual design tour of the family’s home in Switzerland as they wanted to incorporate the design elements they loved from this home in their UK property.”  The solution we proposed was very much led by textiles – it was really important we selected hardwearing performance fabrics which would work well for the children and pets.

Our client loved GP Baker fabrics Home – G P & J Baker (gpjbaker.com) with more traditional prints, this created a wonderful base to layer in complimentary paint colours, finishes and textures to create a beautiful, understated design scheme. This was the perfect combination to create a clean, elegant and timeless home.

We created full interior design schemes for most of the home – this included spatial plans, sourcing and installing all furniture and lighting.  We custom made soft furnishings and window treatments, selected floor materials and hardware finishes.

Mint Architecture had appointed Westbury for all the joinery and orangery extension, so we worked closely with them to select the internal doors, including colour finishes and the front door style and accessories. The style and design had to flow and so a close working relationship was required to achieve this.”

The result of the team’s hard work is a lovely family home which gives the family a functional yet stylish space with beautiful joinery that complements the finish.

How The Feel Is Achieved

Claire’s tip for creating a relaxed and open style:

Textiles and colours are essential to create a relaxed atmosphere, don’t be afraid to layer in tones, textures and pattern to add depth to your design.  While open plan living is lovely, it’s important to separate your spaces – rugs are a wonderful way to ‘zone’ areas

Bring the outside in! Adding fresh pots in the kitchen and olives trees in the living and entrance hall connects these spaces to the outdoors, adding a calming element to the room.

A lighting plan is essential to create the desired atmospheres, I would recommend thinking about how you like to use the space and creating multiple systems for your kitchen and living spaces.

Bespoke furnishings if possible, create that truly custom and professional finish. I love designing large, upholstered ottomans to fit the space perfectly, instantly adding softness to a space, but also functional as a coffee table and additional seating.
