Listed Stable Block Refurbishment
Open GalleryAt Westbury, we enjoy the challenge of working on different projects, so when we were approached to provide the windows and doors for this listed stable block we jumped at the opportunity.
The stable block is set on the grounds of a stunning rural Essex country club, which is also used as a wedding venue. The owners wanted to convert the currently unused outbuildings into additional guest bedrooms. This provided the opportunity for creativity, as adapting the usage of a building presents its own challenges, especially where listed building restrictions apply.
At Westbury, traditional British manufacturing is at the heart of our business and the sensitive conservation of a period building is second nature to us. Our team’s knowledge of fenestration and timber allowed us to advise and work with the clients to produce windows and doors that were sure to meet the requirements.
All the doors needed to be in keeping with the traditional style, so we produced black painted boarded doors, as well as stable door sets, louvered to provide ventilation. To obtain consent for the new casement windows, we designed external shutters that had the appearance of stable doors.
When shut, they have the appearance of a traditional stable door, but when open, guests have access to a fully functioning window, natural light and fresh air. This block now provides comfortable accommodation without compromising the building’s original charm.
Westbury Garden Rooms, the sister company to Westbury Windows and Joinery, also provided the stunning garden room at the back of this property, along with its boarded roof lantern.
