Replacement Timber Windows and Roof Lantern for Essex Family Home
Open GalleryWanting to update their welcoming country-style property in Essex, the homeowners wanted to replace their existing uPVC windows and doors and invest in beautifully crafted timber products instead. This enchanting home includes an extension at the rear that required a new roof lantern and a traditional timber-framed barn outbuilding that needed new windows and an entrance door.
For this project, we worked closely with the family and their architects to supply 26 windows in various sizes to suit the scale and proportions of the property. Throughout the house and the outbuilding, we fitted side-hung opening Casement Windows from our heritage collection with friction hinges, instead of traditional butt hinges. Attached to the frame on one side only, the Casement Windows are either single, in pairs or in rows depending on the shape of each room. The windows all feature Accoya cill extensions and Tricoya cheeks to heads and jambs to accommodate for the weatherboarding at the rear of the house. We also specified a French Window on the upper floor to meet with escape regulations. Similar to French Doors, French Casement Windows offer a clear opening without a centre post, otherwise known as a mullion. Cleverly concealed trickle vents were also included to ensure the windows complied with ventilation requirements.
We fitted outward opening folding doors on the ground floor, again from our heritage range to match the windows. Featuring the beautiful detailing of finely crafted timber, both sets of doors open up onto the patio from different family rooms, helping the interiors to flow. For the master bedroom on the first floor, we designed outward opening French Doors with sidelights to give the homeowners a spectacular view of their garden.
All Westbury products go through a stringent design process to ensure they are technically superior while achieving a pleasing and traditional appearance. We take the time to construct flush joints, sharp edges, and classic mouldings to result in a truly unique product. For this project, we specified toughened Argon-filled glazing throughout, providing outstanding insulation and ensuring a warm and cosy home. Three spray-applied layers of Westbury Wash White microporous paint give the doors and windows a fresh look, with white glazing bars adding definition and character, along with polished chrome ironmongery.
A spectacular, timber and glass roof lantern transformed the simple flat-roof extension, creating a bright and spacious room that now benefits from the additional ceiling height and sunshine. Every part of this roof lantern is designed with longevity in mind. Manufactured using a knot-free engineered timber called Accoya, this bespoke roof lantern will stay strong and stable for many years to come. We use powder-coated external aluminium cladding to match the roof capping, making the whole structure maintenance free. The decorative ball finials are made of resin so they will not crack and suffer damage from water ingress.
